ADMISSION INTO THE PROGRAMMES OF THE SCHOOL OF POSTGRADUATE STUDIES FOR 2020/2021 ACADEMIC YEAR

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the Postgraduate programmes of Akwa Ibom State University for the 2020/2021 academic year. All applicants seeking admission into the postgraduate programmes must satisfy the University matriculation requirements.

FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE

Postgraduate Diploma in Agricultural Economics

a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in five (5) relevant subjects including English Language and Mathematics at not more than two sittings.

b) Higher National Diploma in Agriculture with minimum of lower credit.

c) Minimum of Pass in Higher National Diploma in Agriculture or related disciplines with six (6) years cognate experience.

d) Minimum of Third Class Degree at Bachelor’s level in Agriculture or Science – related discipline.

M.Sc. in Agricultural Economics

a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in five (5) relevant subjects including English Language and Mathematics at not more than two sittings.

b) HND Upper Credit plus PGD at Distinction level.

c) Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture or Science- related discipline with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division.

Admission Requirements PGD programme

a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in five (5) relevant subjects including English Language at not more than two sittings.

b) Minimum of HND Upper Credit in Animal Production/Animal Science.

DEPARTMENT OF CROP SCIENCE

Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Crop Science.

M.Sc. in Crop Science with specialization in: Plant Breeding and Genetics, Crop Physiology, Horticulture, Seed Science and Technology, Weed Science, Entomology, Crop Production and Farming Systems.

Ph.D. in Crop Science with specialization in: Crop Physiology, Horticulture, Plant Breeding, Weed Science, Seed Science and Technology.

Admission Requirements:

PGD Programme

(a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in five (5) relevant subjects including English Language at not more than two sittings.

(b) Higher National Diploma in Agriculture with a minimum of Lower Credit.

(c) Minimum of Pass in Higher National Diploma with ten (10) years cognate experience.

(d) Minimum of 3rd Class Division at Bachelor’s level in Agriculture with a minimum of five years cognate experience.

M.Sc. Programme

(a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in five (5) relevant subjects including English Language and Mathematics at not more than two sittings.

(b) HND Upper Credit plus PGD at Distinction Level.

(c) Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture or related discipline with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division.

Ph.D. Programme

(a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in five (5) relevant subjects including English Language and Mathematics at not more than two sittings.

(b) Master’s Degree in any of the fields of Agriculture or related discipline with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 on a 5-point scale or average of 60% (B) from a recognized university.

 DEPARTMENT OF SOIL SCIENCE

Postgraduate Diploma in Soil Science.

Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Soil Science with specialization in: Soil Microbiology, Pedology, Soil Physics and Conservation, Soil Chemistry and Mineralogy, Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition, Soil Survey and Land Use Planning, and Environmental Management.

Admission Requirements

 PGD Programme

a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in five (5) relevant subjects including English Language at not more than two sittings.

b) Higher National Diploma in Agriculture with a minimum of Lower Credit.

c) Minimum of Pass in Higher National Diploma plus ten (10) years cognate experience.

d) Minimum of Third Class Degree at Bachelor’s level in Agriculture or Sciences

M.Sc. Programme

FACULTY OF ARTS

DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

M,A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy with specialization in: Metaphysics, Epistemology, Moral Philosophy (Ethics), Logic, History of Philosophy, African Philosophy and Political Philosophy.

Admission Requirements:

Master of Arts (M.A) programme

a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in five (5) relevant subjects including English Language at not more than two sittings.

b) A minimum of Second Class Lower Division at the Bachelor’s Level in Philosophy from a recognized University.

c) Holders of Postgraduate Diploma in Philosophy at Distinction Level from a recognized University.

Ph.D. in Philosophy Programme

(a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in five (5) relevant subjects including English Language at not more than two sittings.

(b) A minimum of Second Class Lower Division at the Bachelor’s Level in Philosophy from a recognized University.

a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in five (5)subjects including English Language and any four Arts and Social Science subjects at not more than two sittings.

b) A minimum of Second Class Lower Degree in Religious Studies or its variants (e.g. Religion, Religious and Cultural Studies, Religious Management and Cultural Studies, Islamic or Christian Religious Studies, Theology).

Ph.D. Programme

a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in five (5) relevant subjects including English Language at not more than two sittings.

b) A minimum of Second Class Lower Degree in Religious Studies or its variants (e.g. Religion, Religious and Cultural Studies, Religious Management and Cultural Studies, Islamic or Christian Religious Studies, Theology), from a recognized university.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Programme

a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in five (5) relevant subjects including English Language and Literature at not more than two sittings.

b) Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division in Performing Arts, Theatre/Media/Film or Creative Arts.

c) A Master of Arts Degree in Performing Arts or related discipline with a CGPA of not less than 4.00 on a 5-point scale or average of 60% (B) from a recognized university.

FACULTY OF EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE EDUCATION

Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Library and Information Science.

Postgraduate Diploma in Education.

Master of Education, (M.Ed.) and Ph.D. in Educational Research, Measurement and Evaluation.

Admission Requirements:

Postgraduate Diploma in Library and Information Science (PGDLIS)

a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in five (5) relevant subjects including English Language and Mathematics at not more than two sittings.

b) Bachelor’s Degree in any field of specialization with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division from a recognized University.

c) Candidates with 3rd Class Degree in areas other than Library and Information Science with three years relevant post qualification experience may be considered for admission.

d) HND in Library and Information Science, at Upper Credit Level.

e) Candidates who possess HND in Library and Information Science at a Lower Credit Level with 5 years cognate post-qualification experience may be considered.

Postgraduate Diploma in Education

(a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in five (5) relevant subjects including English Language and Mathematics at not more than two sittings.

(b) Bachelor’s degree in any field of specialization with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division from a recognized University.

(c) Higher National Diploma (HND) in Education with a minimum of Credit Level in any of the teaching Subjects.

(d) Candidates with Higher National Diploma (HND) at Credit Level in any field of specialization with 3 years relevant post-qualification experience may be considered for admission.

(e) Candidates with 3rd Class Degree in any area of specialization, with three years relevant postqualification experience, may be considered for admission.

 M.Ed. Physics Education Programme

(a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and one other subject, at not more than two sittings.

(b) Bachelor’s Degree in Physics Education with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division from a recognized University. (c) Candidates with HND in Physics from recognized Polytechnics must in addition, possess a PGDE at a minimum of Upper Credit level.

M.Ed. Integrated Science Education Programme

(a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics and any one of Physics, Chemistry and Biology and any other two relevant subjects at not more than two sittings.

(b) Bachelor’s Degree in any of the Science Education Programmes with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division from a recognized University.

(c) Candidates with HND in any of the Sciences from recognized Polytechnics must in addition possess a PGDE at a minimum of Upper Credit Level.

M.Ed. Chemistry Education Programme

(a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and any other subject at not more than two sittings.

(b) Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry Education with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division from a recognized University.

(c) Candidates with HND in Chemistry from approved Polytechnics must in addition possess a PGDE at a minimum of Upper Credit Level.

M.Ed. Biology Education Programme

(a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Biology and two other relevant subjects at not more than two sittings.

(b) Bachelor’s Degree in Biology Education with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division from a recognized university.

(c) Candidates with HND in Biology from approved Polytechnics must in addition possess a PGDE at a minimum of Upper Credit level.

M.Ed. Mathematics Education Programme

  1. SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics at not more than two sittings.
  2. Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics Education with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division from a recognized University.
  3. Candidates with HND in Mathematics from recognized Polytechnics must in addition possess a PGDE at a minimum of Upper Credit Level.

M.Ed. Educational Research, Measurement & Evaluation Programme

(a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics and any other three relevant subjects at not more than two sittings.

(b) Bachelor’s Degree in any Education Programme with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division from an approved University

(c) Candidates with HND in any of the l Sciences from approved Polytechnics must in addition possess a PGDE at a minimum of Upper Credit Level.

Ph.D. Physics Education Programme

a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any other relevant subject at not more than two sittings.

b) Master’s Degree in Physics Education with a CGPA of 4.00 on a 5-point scale or average of 60% (B).

Ph.D. Chemistry Education Programme

(a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and any other subject at not more than two sittings.

(b) Master’s Degree in Chemistry Education with a CGPA of 4.00 on a 5-point scale or average of 60% (B).

FACULTY OF ENGINEERING

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING

 Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Master of Engineering (M.Eng) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering with specialization in: Electronics and Telecommunications.

Admission Requirements:

PGD Programme in Electrical and Electronic Engineering

a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and any other relevant subject at not more than two sittings.

b) Minimum of Third Class Degree at the Bachelor’s Level in a related area from a recognised University. c) HND with a minimum of Upper Credit in a related area from a recognized institution.

d) Holders of the HND with a Lower Credit and a minimum of five (5) years post-qualification relevant experience may be considered.

 Master of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with the following options: Electronics and Telecommunications.

a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and any other relevant subject at not more than two sittings.

b) Holders of PGD with Upper Credit in relevant Engineering discipline, from a recognized University may also be admitted provided other University matriculation requirements are satisfied.

c) Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division in relevant Engineering discipline from a recognized University.

 DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL/PETROCHEMICAL ENGINEERING

Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Chemical Engineering.

Master of Engineering (M.Eng) in Chemical Engineering.

Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering

Admission Requirements:

Postgraduate Diploma in Chemical/Petrochemical Engineering

a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and any other relevant subject at not more than two sittings.

b) HND with Upper Credit or its equivalent in Chemical, Petroleum or Petrochemical Engineering from any recognized Polytechnic.

c) A Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 2nd Class Lower division in Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry or any other relevant discipline from a recognized University.

d) Candidates who possess Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical, Petroleum or Petrochemical Engineering with Third Class from any recognized University may be considered.

Master of Engineering Programme in Chemical Engineering

(a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and any other relevant subject at not more than two sittings.

(b) First Degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division in relevant Engineering discipline from a recognized University.

(c) Candidates with PGD at Upper Credit in level in Chemical Engineering, from a recognized University may also be admitted provided that other University matriculation requirements are satisfied.

Ph.D. Programme in Chemical Engineering

(a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and any other relevant subject at not more than two sittings.

(b) M.Sc. or M. Eng. Degrees, with a minimum average of 60% (B) or CGPA of 4.00 on a 5-point scale.

DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING

PGD in Agricultural Engineering M.Eng with specialization in: Farm Power and Machinery Engineering, Soil and Water Engineering, Agricultural Products Processing and Storage Engineering and Environmental Engineering.

Admission Requirements

Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Agricultural Engineering

  1. a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in five (5) relevant subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any other two (2) subjects at not more than two sittings.
  2. b) Higher National Diploma in Engineering with a minimum of Upper Credit from a recognized institution.
  3. c) Minimum of Pass at Bachelor’s Level in Engineering from recognized University.

 M.Eng in Agricultural Engineering

  1. SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in five (5) relevant subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and any other subject at not more than two sittings.
  2. Postgraduate Diploma at Upper Credit Level in a relevant Engineering discipline from a recognized University.
  3. Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant Engineering discipline with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division from a recognized University.

FACULTY OF PHYSICAL SCIENCES

DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY

Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Geology.

M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Geology with specialization in: Structural Geology and Tectonics, Applied Geophysics, Sedimentary and Petroleum Geology, Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology, Mineral Exploration, Biostratigraphy.

Admission Requirements:

Postgraduate Diploma Programme

a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and any other relevant subject at not more than two sittings

b) A Bachelor’s degree in Geosciences from an approved university with a minimum of Third Class.

c) Holders of HND in relevant programmes from approved institutions with a minimum of Upper Credit may also be considered for admission.

Master of Science (M.Sc.) Degree Programme

(a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and any other relevant subject at not more than two sittings.

(b) First degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division in Geosciences from a recognized University.

(c) Candidates who possess Third Class Division at the Bachelor’s Level or HND and university PGD in Geosciences with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or Merit may be considered for admission.

Ph.D. Programme

(a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and any other relevant subject at not more than two sittings.

(b) First degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division in Geosciences from a recognized University.

(c) Master’s degree in the relevant area with a minimum CGPA of 4.0 on a 5 –point scale or average of 60% (B).

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Mathematics.

M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Mathematics with specialization in: Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics.

Admission Requirements

Postgraduate Diploma programme

a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, and other relevant Science subjects at not more than two sittings.

b) B.Sc. degree in Mathematics with a Third Class from a recognised University.

c) B.Sc. degree in other relevant disciplines with a minimum of a Second Class Lower Division.

d) Candidates who possess HND in relevant disciplines from approved institutions with a minimum of Upper Credit may be considered for admission.

MSc. Programme

(a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics and other relevant Science subjects at not more than two sittings.

(b) B.Sc. degree in Mathematics with a minimum of a Second Class Lower Division from any recognized University.

(c) PGD in Mathematics with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or Merit.

Ph.D. Programme

  1. a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics and other relevant Science subjects at not more than two sittings.
  2. b) M.Sc. degree in Mathematics from a recognized University with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 on a 5- point scale or average of 60% (B).
  3. c) Candidates who possess Bachelor’s Degree with First Class honours in Mathematics could be admitted for the M.Sc./Ph.D. programmes with the hope that after the M.Sc. course work and a satisfactory report by relevant Postgraduate Committees, the candidates programme could be changed to a fulltime Ph.D. programme.

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Physics.

M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Physics with specialization in: Atmospheric Physics and Space Physics, Geophysics, Electronic and Engineering Physics and Communication Physics, Radiation, Health and Nuclear Physics, Condensed Matter Physics and Mathematical Physics, Energy and Environmental Physics.

Admission Requirements:

PGD Programme

  1. a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and other relevant Science subjects at not more than two sittings.
  2. b) Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of Third Class Division in Education Physics c) Candidates who possess HND in Pure and Applied Physics from approved institutions with a minimum of Upper Credit may be considered for admission

 M.Sc Programme

  1. a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and any other relevant subject at not more than two sittings.
  2. b) Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division in Physics from any recognized University
  3. c) Candidates with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division in Mathematics, Computer Science or Engineering from any recognized University may be considered for admission.
  4. d) Candidates who possess Third Class at the Bachelor’s Level or HND at Upper Credit Level and PGD in Physics at Upper Credit level may be considered for admission.

Ph.D. Programme

  1. a) SSC or its equivalent with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and any other relevant subject at not more than two sittings.
  2. b) Master’s Degree in Physics with a CGPA of not less than 4.00 on a 5-point scale or average of 60% (B).
